TACO ROUTE

.This is a blog created to record our odyssey through Mexico City's taquerías in an attempt to capture the uniqueness of each of these iconic places of Mexico.

Tacos "El Tizoncito"

At their beginning it was a small local ran by a lady called Doña Conchita, a family business that started in 1966. This local was located on the corner of Tamaulipas and Campeche street, in La Condesa. They say they're the creators of the tacos al pastor, the most famous taco in Mexico.

Let's start with the appetizers: With every table comes a couple of tortilla chips and their also famous beans salsa, where you dip your totopos.
The service is very good, the waiters are gentle and always helpful with the customers.
The food doesn't let you down and fulfils every expectation, once again you get what you pay for.
We ordered 2 tacos al pastor and 1 gringa de la bola, which basically is two flour tortillas with melted cheese and pastor on top of it. They also have a very good dessert which is the corn pie, that we added to our order.

Tacos "El Borrego Viudo"

It started as a birriería business but it failed, so they have to turned it into a taquería. It is famous because of their secret salsa which is delicious.

Its concept of bringing the tacos from the trompo to your car and their 24 hour service has given this establishment a unique fame which is mainly known for. The tacos aren't something out of this world but that doesn't mean that they aren't good. Just one thing: Their size. They're incredibly small, you can eat one with just ONE bite and we're not sure if that´s a good thing, but for the price, you get what you pay for.

Restaurant "El Rincón de la Lechuza"

It all started in 1971 with a small premise located at Miguel Ángel de Quevedo street, at the south of Mexico City. Today, it is a restaurant capable of serving to 150 costumers at a time and it´s managed by the same family that started the business; The Seidel family. They served traditional grilled beef tacos and they have complemented it with a little bit of home-made food.

In here, we ordered three orders of pastor and a jar of roselle water. It didn´t go as we planned talking about the order of tacos. We thought the order would have three tacos but instead it was a big taco with double tortilla. The tortilla was hand-made and at the very moment you asked for it. The water was absolutely delicious and refreshing.

Super Tacos "El Chupacabras"

It opened in 1985 as a small stand and got recognition from the people who visited the Cineteca, later on it was able to re open as a proper establishment. Its speciality are the tacos chupa, they basically are a taco campechano but with a little twist of their own, they say it has 127 different spices.

The service is really fast but for some people it can be a little "rude", This is in case you´re used to get the cordiality you get inside of a restaurant. In this establishment you are not going to get that, you are not going to be treated in a bad way but don´t expect to get a lot of attention.
Talking about the taco, the tortilla has a very good size, but it wasn´t strong enough to carry the weight of the meat so it can break really fast. The meat inside the tortilla it´s really good. But the best part of this taquería are the extras you can add to your tacos, you have a big variety of them to pick off.

Tacos "El Villamelón"

Founded in 1961 from a bullfight fanatic family. Called like this because the original owner, Don Rafael, said that his business got full of villamelones, to which he referred to the people who talked about the toreadas but didn't know anything about it. It is original located in front of Mexico City's Plaza de Toros.
We were attended right away, we already knew what we were going to order so this facilitated our experience in the restaurant. Our order was: 2 quesadillas campechanas, 1 taco campechano and 1 taco costeño.
The campechanos are a combination of three mexican ingredients; Two typical meats, the first one its called cecina and the other one longaniza. The final ingredient its something quite difficult to explain, fired pork skin or commonly as chicharrón.
The costeño its the same but they add chile verde.

The food is excellent, really, really good. The service, as we already said its outstanding and the food doesn't get behind. With your order they give you (for free!) a plate full of prepared onions, which also were delicious.
All together brings a terrific and satisfying meal and also bring you an exceptional experience at the end of it.

In general, both the tacos and the quesadillas were amazing. The tortillas, the meat, the cheese and the salsa are of a very good quality.

Tacos Copacabana

Located at the south of Mexico City, this taquería started as a small stand in front of a cinema called "Copacabana". With the pass of time, the small stand took over the cinema's building becoming in one of the most famous taquerías in the city, with 3 subsidiaries.

First of all, the service. You'd think that for such a recognisable name you'd receive a proper amount of attention, but it wasn't the case. We had to wait around 15 minutes to get attended and another 20 minutes to get an horchata we had order. We couldn't order our food until the water arrived, but finally we ordered 2 pastores and 2 suaderos.

Even though the service wasn't as good as we expected it to be, the tacos were. In general, the tacos are very good although we thought that they are overpriced. Every component inside of the taco is excellent, but the price overwhelmed the experience. It is a very pleasant meal although you have to wait for a very long time to get your order.
